Learning and development as a lifetime journey

Sacha Coburn talking about the value of learning

Summary:

One topic we delved into with Sacha was the importance of learning every day and how it affects our wellbeing.

Sacha shares the fact that our brains are constantly decaying, and if we don’t keep testing our abilities through learning and development then it is also most inevitable that can get stuck in the same routines and structures meaning our brains stop firing in some cases!

A great example that Sacha shares is that of learning to drive a car! Think about that first time you got behind the wheel, you were hyper-aware of your surroundings and the steps you needed to take to get from A to B! Compare that to now, sometimes you catch yourself thinking how did I get here because driving has become too automatic!

To combat the ‘decaying’ of our brains we should always be aiming to learn something new!

As Sacha shares, it could be something small like using Duolingo to learn a new language or taking up a new physical activity like tennis or golf.

Sacha also forces herself to understand their intellectual opponents’ points of view by reading about their perspectives. The goal is to stay open-minded and avoid becoming too certain of our beliefs as we get older. Learning every day is crucial for our brain’s wellbeing and helps us stay connected to the world around us.
